The Evercreech History Society meets at 7.30 pm on the third Tuesday each month  at the Village Hall (see directions below) between September and May and hold  regular events with guest speakers.  We don't charge a membership fee, but do ask for a £3.00 donation for each talk, to cover the hire of the hall and speakers. Our current programme is below.

2024 Events Programme

Tuesday 16th April 2024: Defending Somerset by Richard Raynsford

In June 1940, the country was expecting an invasion by Hitler, and in order to defend itself it embarked on one of the largest engineering works in its history, involving the fortification of the coast and the erection of a series of stop lines to slow down the invading army.  The Green Stop Line was designed to protect Bristol, and ran from Burnham on Sea across the Somerset Levels and Moors, and over the Mendips to the Kennet and Avon canal at the Dundas Aqueduct.  The talk will investigate the surviving remains of the stop line and put it in the context of other measures taken during World War II in Somerset.
